Halibut plans!

Postby Fish-or-man? » Wed May 02, 2012 9:54 pm

May sure is an exciting time to be a Washington angler! Does anyone have any big halibut plans this year? May 17-19 (Thursday-Saturday) a buddy and I are heading to Freshwater Bay for the second year in a row. I should've started exercising my wrists a month ago. 300-450 feet retrieves on an antique Penn reel- I can already feel the burn!

Thanks for the info! I'm launching at Freshwater Bay, but I'm sure I'll be at the mouth of the Elwha at some point! We typically dropped around 300-350 feet last year just northeast of Freshwater Bay. There's a little platform there that has a nice slope. Got one in two days-- which as first time Straight halibuters we considered success. But would love to step it up this year. Someone else told me today they've had steady success jigging around only 200' by the steep mound near the Elwha... I'll definitely give it a try!

Good luck! I have a few buddies up there fishing. They are in the 4-600 foot range though :) If you ever need another angler let me know! [biggrin]

Thanks for the info Fish-Freak! And ResQ, if I had a bigger boat I'd cast you an invite for sure!

I know my dad's going with some of his coworkers to Sekiu I think during memorial day weekend. I'll probably only get one trip in with him on our boat out at Port Angeles fishing the spit and out at the rock pile.
