What do you experienced trollers use for weights on your down riggers? I have two Scotty powered 30"ers and have considered buying Cannon finned in 6#. I am mainly lake fishing and In the Columbia part time. Is 6# a good choice?

Also looking for someone to show me the ropes at Rufus Woods for trout and Walleye this Winter; my boat or yours.

Hi OS...I like 8#or 10# for where I fish and the type of fishing I do. I troll Roosevelt, Banks, Potholes and Lk. Wa. Currently I'm running 2ea 10#ers.

I'm running 8 & 10 pounders. I run the 8 pounders in Lake Chelan (Not alot of current) and the 10 pounders in the Columbia (Lots of current)

I run 10lb weights in the lakes and 12 to 15lb weights in the salt. Your Scottys should have no problems with weights up to 15lbs. I think 6lb would be a bit light unless you are going to fish shallow or slow exclusively. With 6lb weights, if you are 60+ feet down and start trolling at a good clip, you are going to have some serious blowback. Just my 2 cents.

Have to agree with the rest, I wouldn't use anything less than 8# and 10# would probably be better even in lakes. I have Scotty's on our boat and the 8# finned weights do seem to blow back quite abit, so I'll be moving to some heavier weights to reduce that some. I also troll mostly in Lake Roosevelt, in the 60' - 80' range, but look forward to trying Couer d'Alene and possibly Pend Orielle in the next year or so. There are some big trout in LPO and landlocked Chinook in Couer d'Alene just waiting to be caught. :-)

8 for lake 12 for the columbia. reason for 12 in the columbia is the current.

12lb is what i use salt or freshwater. Dont bother with the lesser weights you will only waste your money been seen and done it mate. Where are you fishing in the Big C that you are using downriggers?

I replaced the steel cable on my Scotty Depthmaster with braided line to reduce drag since I'm on a kayak, and I only need a 4 or 6 pound ball. The 6lb gets me to 200 feet with minimal blowback.

I'm not an "experienced" Troller, But I switched to the "pancake" style with the fin in 10# size. I noticed a marked reduction in blowback when I changed from the cannonball style. I,ve trolled to 250 ft here in Lake chelan. Then I replaced the steel cable with Power Pro, and feel it was a good move.
Good luck with your research for the right one.

concur with 10 lbers at a minimum. On the Columbia DR for salmon. There's an old article I did on Hanford Reach fall chinook. we used riggers down 25 to 40 ft, works great, but be ready to cut that line if you snag bottom.
