New salmon rod Questions

Hey guys i have been wanting an okuma celilo for about a year now and my friends dad was driving us around and we came up to a garage sale and i see the Celilo sitting right there, the rod i want! so i ask how much and she says 10 bucks! SOLD, i brought it home and relized the first guide was broken, i was wondering how to fix it without it looking all bad? Thanks! Cant wait to get to salmon fishing!!

it should fish fine as long as is not da tip. ive fished rod with missing eye and it was fine...or buy new eye and wrap with sewing thread and put clear fingernail polish on thread a cheap fix..or take it to nfc and have them wrap new guide$$$$$$$

find a rod shop that builds rods, they should do it for pretty cheap

i have the same rod. its my back up now as i broke the tip off, i filed it down to the 2nd eyelit/guide, so its missing the top 4" or so.. fishes great still! maybe not as responsive to slight touches, I use it for trolling mostly.. my 2nd one, i like them so much..

Also how do you get to the mouth of the wallace river?

It should fish fine, but like someone else already said, you can buy eyelets and just wrap it on yourself. I've done it before using some left over braided line and super glue (glue the eyelet to the pole > wrap with braid > coat the wrapping with super glue). The fish don't care how it looks, as long as it works.

That'll work for a little bit, until it gets wet and peels or rips. To me that would look worse than wrapping it with thread.

Wrapping stuff with thread isn't really that hard to do, just take your time and keep tension. Start at the center and wrap your way out to the end. Then back to center and go the other way out and back. One wrap next to the other, if you see space between the threads cinch it up with your fingernail. Once you get out to the end of the 1st layer, glue it and start going back into the center. Put 2-4 layers on and you are good to go.

1st time I ever thread wrapped anything was in the 6th grade, we would make darts out of a pin and a toothpic, we'd superglue a round toothpic to the pin, then wrap thread from about 1/8"(plus or minus) up on the pin to about 1/4" below the end of the toothpic. we would wrap it until the body was about 1/4" in diameter at the pin and coat it in superglue, then glue cardboard wings to the top. Then take em to school and throw em at each other in the halls. They actually flew pretty good and man did you know when you got tagged .

Now... where was I going with this...OH Yeah - if I could do it in the 6th grade, anybody should be able to do it at pretty much any age.

My dad owns a couple celilo rods and most are broken from fighting fish or breaking off from a snag. Also those sst rods are also on the bottom of my list because I have seen so many just snap in half from just playing fish, don't be fooled by the cheap price.

Also those sst rods are also on the bottom of my list because I have seen so many just snap in half from just playing fish, don't be fooled by the cheap price.

I understand that but how much is an sst or celilo, $40, 50. 60? A berkely IM8 when on sale at sportco can be 55 bucks and they are really, really nice rods for the price and normal price at wholesale retail at 70 bucks. IMO quality beats quanity when it comes to stuff like that.
Plus ODH I said lamiglas, west premier rods at sportco when on sale are $85, bill herzog special is great for salmon and steelhead of any size. If budget is the problem than I am sorry for discouraging words but when I see a guy horsing in a fish and snap his rod in half and say oh well I will just get another $40 rod for 3rd time, why not just buy a quality inexpensive rod that is a little more. Again I am sorry if my thoughts are discourging or anything.

I agree here. I'd spend the extra $20-30 and get the Berkley Air IM-8 over the Okumas. Not only are the Berkley Rods tougher IMHO they are also more sensitive at the tip and have more backbone.
