Rod Line Ratings...

Postby FishBaitThe2nd » Sat Jun 30, 2012 12:10 pm

The other daya I was looking at some fishing rods. Im wanting a 9'6, but every single 9'6 rod i looked at the line ratings were rated 8-12lb line. When i fish for kings im using 20 pound line, so i didnt think a 9'6 rod would be good, what would happen if i used 20 pound line on these rods?

I will probably just buy another 8'6 rod, since I cant find a 9'6 rod thats going to fit my needs, and i dont want to use a 10'6 rod yet.

Yeah for kings you definitely dont want to use an 8-12lb rod especially if your fishing an area like the skok. I also think an 8 ft 6 is about perfect for a small river like that. I use a 9 6 or 10 6 only in areas where im using a bobber and fishing some bigger water, otherwise an 8 6 is perfectly suitable. On the samish last year I even used a 7ft 9in rod that was rated 10-25lb test. It wasn't sensitive but I mostly used bobbers, and it got the job done, plus only cost me 30 bucks so it wasn't a big deal if I broke it.

It seems from my exhaustive search for salmon/steelhead specific rods that no one seems to make a 9'6" spinning rod in an action heavier than medium. There are a few med-heavy 9' & 8'6" salmon/steelhead specific spinning rods, Berkley IM8 Air and Lamiglas come to mind here. You can find heavier action 9'6" rods in the surf rod or inshore saltwater categories but IMHO you will lose a lot of sensitivity in those selections in exchange for backbone. I have a med action 9'6" Lamiglas G1307 and an 9' med-heavy Berkley IM8 Air A94-9MH.

Ive had a berkley air IM8 for 2 years, caught SO many giant kings on it, and never broke it. I broke 6 rods king season one year, but once i got the IM8 ive had it every since, super strong eyes that dont bend, ive chipped it, cracked and smashed it and it WILL NOT BREAK! they go for like 80$ too so if your looking for a perfect chinook rod for rivers, ocean etc... anything, its a great rod for under 100$ hands down my go to rod for putting the hurt on fish
