The lake is warming up and the larger fish are now coming to the surface. Lots of cookie cutter fish the first few days then the larger fish showed up in the evening. If your a power baiter there was no trouble hooking bigger fish. We easily averaged 15 fish days each.

Fished Wannacut all day from the shore with anywhere from 2 - 8 poles in the water. Tried everything; power bait, eggs, etc. Not a single bite! The lake was totally dead.

Fished Wannacut morning and evening for two days but only caught one keeper. Used gold flatfish and red wedding ring all over the lake. Very nice resort with nice people. Good base for fishing all the nice lakes near tonasket.

Wannacut Lake is seven miles south southwest from Oroville via Blue Lake Road. The lake is 411 acres and is primarily a put-and-take fishery for rainbows. Although pan-sized rainbows are the norm, carryovers exceed 16 inches. The fish are plump and feisty due to the abundant aquatic life in the lake: scuds, chironomids, damsels, etc.
The lake has no public campground, much to our disappointment, as our map mislead us. There is a public restroom, however, at the public boat launch at the southwest side of the lake. The lake is surrounded by private property. Fortunately, the owners authorize fisherman to trespass their property to fish, but no camping is allowed. We camped at nearby Blue Lake, one mile east, which has no amenities or designated campsite.
The manager of Sun Cove Resort informed us that he might have one more spot available and it would cost $25 per night to stake our tent. We had just spent $48 to stay in a motel in Omak, which had beds! The manager laughed when we asked if there was a public campground on the lake. He apparently didn't realize that his fee for staking a tent was more laughable. So we camped at Blue Lake for free.
The lake is large and the wind can be a significant deterrent to kicking a float tube across the lake. I fished with my five- and six-weight rods, and found the clear intermediate line most productive. Although I regret not trying chironomids—because they are fun to catch fish with—I used Denny’s Stillwater Nymph, which suggests both damsels and scuds, because throat samples showed both, although chironomids were the clear majority by about 15 to 1, as seen in the vial contents from an 18-inch rainbow.
I lost two fish and caught one in the northeast shallows before heading for the northwest shoals, which were vacant of fishermen, although some came by boat later. My present company consisted of goslings and their caring parents, and a seagull that would not leave a certain rock.
With some trial and error I came to the conclusion that finding the fish is the key. I found them within eight to fifteen feet of water mostly, and managed to catch a fish every ten to fifteen minutes when in the right location. I caught one four-inch monster and a couple of dozen 12-inch specimens, and one 18-inch carryover, which was the prize of my fishing.
All of the fish were well conditioned and plump due to the exceptional food supply.
I switched to a marabou damsel pattern with monofilament eyes, which proved irresistible to cruising trout.

Wow!
I fished Wannacut for the first time this weekend with my 7 y\o son. I had wanted him to finally catch some fish so he wouldn't give up on the subject. We made our stay just down from Wannacut, (actually at the Spectacle Lake Resort) Here we met the nicest couple who also had a 7 y\o. He offered to take us up to Wannacut in the morning. We went up and fished from his 19' beautiful boat. The trick seemed to be that we were using downriggers about 7' off the bottom. We were trolling a home made version of a simple "Dick Nite" spoon. My son hooked up within 2 minutes. from then on it was mostly a fish every 10 minutes or so. These fish were between 14"-- 18" The other boy though caught the whopper of the morning. This rainbow measured 21" and must have been 4lbs these fish were fat as can be. With the big one about 5-6" from the belly to the dorsal fin.
Anyway... the trick was to troll deep. I saw just a few caught by other folks.

Got a late start 10:00 am opening day. Picked up a 12" trolling and a 14" using power bait and eggs later. Missed one. Slow bite but the fish were nice. Noticed people with limits who got out of bed and hit the early bite. We got blown off the lake about 2:00 pm. Not a lot of people. Nice lake, good trip.

This is my 3rd year at Wannacut. Fishing is great, Brian and staff are the best. We fished in 47' of water and had our fish in 1 hour using Power Bait and 2 yards of leader with a slep sincher. Nice fish 13" to 27.5". Just got to go back.

Arrived at the lake around 9:00 am, assembled my new pontoon boat at the lakeside. Saw several boats come in with full stringers of fish around 12 to 14 inches. Nice and husky trout. I trolled different wet fly nymphs. Green Wooly Bugger, etc. Not one hit in 2 hours. A lady on the bank using power bait got 2 fish in the same period. Rather slow fishing. Disappointing for my first time at Wannacut but its a beautiful little lake.

Every year, I go up to Lake Wannacut. There is good fishing. We usually catch a lot of fish. The resort is cool too. Our friends Brian and Gail own it. We usually troll with pop gear, and still fish with power bait. Only Rainbow trout and the occasional cutthroat and brown trout are in there. This is a nice lake! There are cabins/Rv spots/ and tent sites for rent. Also boats and paddle boats. I can't remember what the limit is, or how much the boats are. The have an outdoor heated pool. They will weigh your fish for you and then take your picture. They keep the picture though. The trout get up to 6 pounds. The biggest one ever caught was 7-8 pounds, on Brians's wall.
