Decided to try some the old family holes on the chuck today. Knowing full well my chances for a hookups were slim, I was driving to my brothers which takes me right by some great holes. Hit all the great places we used to fish and just remembering, went through the motions and of course caught nothing. Really sad to see what has become of my once favorite river. But at least got to reminisce about the good old days following my dad with my snoopy pole in hand and me and my bro catching bullheads while dad tangled with giant winter slabs. Maybe someday it will be great again, but im not holding my breath

I fished the robe menzel stretch today, got to a nice stretch of holes around 11:00 am. My set up was a telescopic Ul set up with 6# maxima ultra green mono. I started off floating worms, no luck. Then I tried drifting crawlers no luck. Then I tried floating my home cured coho roe... First cast, 10 seconds after my gear hot the water my bobber heads for places unknown, hook set.. It's a pig... So much so I think I'm going to loose my gear... Then I see the red flash... Crap! I'm hooked onto a lively buck coho on my trout rod. I got him in as fast as I could with 6# gear snapped a pic quickly and released him without removing him from the water... I didn't want coho.. So I moved down a hole, tried roe again. Cast bobber down, same thing, this time its a very silver hen and a little bit smaller, released promptly. After that i put the roe away, and tried blue fox, green/silver size 2, 4 cast, 4 coho... Then one snapped it off, ok no worms roe or spinners, then i tried dick night.... Same thing, then jigs, same, then buzzbomb (to see if there was something they wouldnt hit) same thing. I moved holes several times tried flies, spoons bait you name it, couldnt keep the coho off my line. I called it a day around 3pm after c&ring 30+ coho with 50+ hookups some 4 or 5 cast in a row with hook UPS. Too bad it's not open for them .. Went home with tired arms, exhausted from battle. If I would've caught a trout I would've rated it a 5

Decided to take a look at the Pilchuck today. No luck, just a little too much color in the water. Still a great day out there.

Hit Rieter and way too many folks on both sides so decided to hit the Pil around Machias and above toward Granite Falls. Water looks good, no luck for me. Found some keys on a Jagermeister key chain and returned them to the Shell Station in Machias.

Went to Fish by 64th Street NE bridge but found out that construction closed the road down. That will be closed to I think the end of this month. So we went down to Russell Rd bridge and worked down river a little. Worked that section hard with fly line and floats. No takes but that area sure seemed great for holding fish. Was a Nice Day.. Need some water for fresh fish before the river closes.

Took off early from work to try my luck at a spot I’ve been keeping an eye on. There’s only room for one or two anglers so when I saw 3 rigs parked there, I kept driving. Went to another place next to the road and clamored the near vertical path down to gravel bar ten feet below.

On the second cast I hook a beautiful, fat- 15” Rainbow. But with an 8‘-3” Fenwick and 10lb test, I may as well been using a bamboo pole and string. I’m seriously considering switching to ultra light gear for the Pilchuck.

Even though this trip was short (½ hour) It was awesome taking a little time to fish on the way home. Now if I can only remember to bring the camera…

I heard a few fish were caught yesterday near Machias. Supposedly, the Machias area is the only place on the river that has steelhead. I had every intention of being on the water at the crack of dawn but since it was pretty cold this morning I rolled out of bed at 8:30.

I drove by the few spots I had scouted last week and most of the parking was taken up. Kept going down the road and got permission to cross some private property that other anglers use frequently. I decided to keep looking and drove down towards Snohomish and found a nice hole near the Centennial Trial.

After a few casts, I pulled in an 8” cutthroat (he must have been really hungry). About 10 minutes later something hit my rod with a little more “oomph”. I saw mine line zip downstream and then towards the far shore. It was pulling hard so I lightened up the drag and played him for bit. It took out line a few times and jumped once and I decided to end the game. It was a 22” native and my first steelhead. I couldn’t help but smile as he swam away.

For those who have not heard, the Pilchuck was not planted with Steelhead smolts this year and will be closing on Feb 15. until further notice. Sounds like this may be the end for fishing on this wonderful little river. As for now enjoy the rest of this season and remember it closes early. This is sad sad news!!
