drove up to the Samish River very early this morning but the wind was so strong that we didnt stay. we fished from 630 to 930 and saw several jumping around us but didnt get anything on our set ups. we were fishing two different cures of eggs to see what was working better but didnt have any real luck. only saw one fish get brought in and there were very few people there. we fished up and down the mouth but could not find where they were at. hopefully we can have better luck next time.

Another tough day on the river. Not many fins coming through but a few caught. I had only 1 bite on roe. Fished a jig and caught the sunken boat. :(

Keith was the king of the river today with a couple nice hens...one probably around 25-30 lbs.

Well the Samish river is in Whatcom county, not Skagit per the report form mods!

Spent the entire day on the river, wading from I-5 all the way to the big farm building. The fish have left the building.

There were a couple, but not catchable. Very few people as well.

I'm wondering why fishing above I-5 is closed. Can anybody explain that?

On the plus side, now that I've scouted the river, ITS ON FOR NEXT YEAR!!! But don't bother driving to fish the Samish now, unless you're local or something.

Tough day on the river. Only saw 2 fish caught. The locals were saying they hadn't seen it that slow since early August. My feeling is the fish can feel the pressure change and once the rain starts coming they'll be back at it.

Wasn't as hot as yesterday but another good day fishing. I floated roe. Foul hooked a flounder and then hooked a big king, but it spit the hook. My buddy landed a nice 16 lb hen. Biggest of the day was a bright 26 lb buck.

Another great day on the Samish with over 100 fish caught during the tide. I got started pretty late so I ended up being grateful w/a small 5 lb jack king. Bigger than most of my humpies and far nicer to eat!

What a totally amazing day! It was a slow start due to the rain, but man did they start hammering around 10am!
Saw some HUGE ones pulled in. I caught a nice jack and super bright coho - my buddy caught a king and a pink.

I fished the mouth - totally nasty but floated roe successfully along with everybody else there. They jig upstream.

Hit the Samish for the first time today. Worked my way up and down river around the train tracks and the I-5 bridge. First cast at 6am, and fished until 11am...couldn't get a bite to save my life. And there were fish in the water. They were jumping within 10 feet of me all morning long, but they wouldn't take any offerings. I had 2 buddies with me, same deal for them.

There were locals fishing, and they weren't getting anything either and they said these holes are usually real good. In 5 hours of fishing, I didn't see one person land a fish. One guy foul hooked a smaller King by the tail, but that was the only action I saw all day.

The fish were there...they just weren't interested in anything anyone offered today.

Here's what I tried...I threw the kitchen sink at them! LOL

Floating eggs (tried both orange and red)
Trying different depths for the float
Floating eggs with a corky and yarn (actually an aero drifter) above the hook (tried every color I had over the course of the morning)
Drifting eggs (tried different weights from as small as one split shot up to 3/8oz, also tried different leader lengths and different casts)...that river is more like a creek. There is hardly any current at all in a lot of the holes there.
Drifting aero drifters (orange, green, yellow, yellow with red spots, red/black, red, white/black/red)
Drifting eggs and aero drifters together
Moved up and down river to try different holes
And then the locals were jigging and using spinners and that didn't get any action either.

I will say, I did see some Kings pretty clearly when they jumped and they were DARK. Like black dark. But there were a couple that were beefy. They just wouldn't hit anything for anyone.

It was a total bust today...oh well, back to the drawing board.

Well, we found a break in the pink action to go up and check out the fall chinook action on the old Samish. It was pretty exciting! The fish are there, and in good numbers. Tons and tons of 3 to 4 pound jacks, and plenty of larger fish to be had.

Floating big globs of eggs under a float will garner you plenty of action in the AM, afternoon and evening bite are virtually non-existent. Unfortunately, the river closes in 5 days if they don't change their minds, so get out there while you can.

This trip we broke off on 4 monsters while working for our limits, but the jacks ended up coming in to shore. Since it's two fish and you're done, that's what you'll see in the picture.
