BANKS
Nov. 15, 2001
By Dale Bailey
Most of the people I know that fish or camp at Banks Lake use the state facilities at Steamboat State Park. The campsites are very nice but because of the popularity of the park and the reservation system the state uses, it sometimes is difficult to secure the campsite on the date you want. This year my fishing partner and our sons decided to try another site. I chose the Coulee Playground Resort, located at the North end of the lake, close to Coulee Dam.
The lake has just about every species of freshwater fish. It is about 30 miles long and about 1 mile wide. It is the old Columbia river bed and in some areas there are towering rocks that you can fish around or on some you can beach your boat and fish from the rock island. Some of the shoreline has brushy coves that contain lots of cover for fish. The Smallmouth Bass seem to prefer the rocky area and bite on worms, spinners and most jigs. We beached our boats on a rocky island to stretch our legs and I caught a nice Smallmouth Bass on a nightcrawler. This trip was in the middle of June and the weather was perfect, high 70's during the day and low 50's at night.
