The Year in Review, 2011
2011 Year in ReviewWelcome to my annual “Year in Review” report. Maybe we should call it “State of the Web Site” report. Well, our State is “Good”!The big achievement this year has to be the updating of our Forum. The old forum was buggy and causing unexpected episodes of crashing WashingtonLakes.com. Not a very good thing. Aaron got to work and coded a new forum software system which is much more stable and user/moderator friendly. As is to be expected with updates, there were some i...

Fish Camp 2011
Four Days of Fishing at Ed Iman’s Fish Camp 2011Like a salmon returning to its native stream, each year a group of guides, outdoor writers, and gear manufacturers migrate to Peach Beach RV Campground in Mary Hill, Washington. While salmon migrate to propagate the species, our objective is more modest - to learn about the latest products and outdoor innovations coming to a store near you. And of course we get in some quality fishing and camaraderie. It’s an odyssey I look forward to immensel...

The Year in Review, 2010
The Year in Review, 2010Another year come and gone! It’s been a fun year here at the web site with not a lot of huge changes, just steady growth and friendships shared. This year we watched our Registered Members on the site grow from around 8,600 to 14,201. Our Premium Members grew as well, surpassing 400. We’d love to see that number grow more as the Premium Members have some nice additional features that regular members are missing out on. So do consider a membership. I think you’l...

Ed Iman's Fish Camp 2010
One of the fringe benefits of running a fishing web site is getting to rub elbows with various writers, guides, and outdoor company reps. This year's Fish Camp put on by walleye guide Ed Iman (Ed Iman Guide Service 541-298-3753) was another great event. Four days of fishing, food, and fun at Peach Beach RV Park on the Columbia River near Goldedale, WA (509-773-4698). Aaron and I got to meet with quite a few reps and see some of the newest products coming out in the year ahead. I’ll be po...

The Year in Review, 2009
The Year in Review 2009 Hello and welcome to our 2009 “Year in Review”, my annual attempt to summarize everything that’s been going on at WL.com.It seems every year I could say this, but this year was BUSY! Our biggest event by far was the launch of the Premium Member section in 2009. This all new addition to WL.com was the final leg of my original vision from over ten years ago, to have a “personal online fishing diary” for anglers to use and share. The Premium Members have that and ...

Columbia Sportswear Outdoor Clothing Review
New products come along from time to time that truly show how far technology has advanced in a particular field. This summer I got to try out several clothing products from Columbia Sportswear, and find out about some of the latest innovations in outdoor wear. We anglers in the Pacific Northwest know all too well that if you aren’t dressed right, you aren’t going to be able to fish long enough to wait for that all important bite or lunker bass that’s just under the next lily pad. So in a...

Great Places Washington Book Review
This month I’d like to review a new Washington destinations book from Northwest Outdoors writer and radio host John Kruse. This is John’s first book and it looks like he hit a home run with this first effort.Great Places Washington isn’t your typical “go to” guide book. Rather, it is one man’s exploration of some of this state’s prime outdoor recreational areas. And it’s not a one trick pony book. John delves into many different outdoor pursuits, be it fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, bik...

Year in Review, 2008
Well, another year in the books here at WL.com. This year saw a full year under the new web site, and we were gratified to watch the community grow and new friendships form. Readers made the Forums a popular place to share ideas and meet each other. I’m impressed to see the site continue to grow beyond what I imagined it could be. A fine example of community was this year’s WL.com picnic, which doubled in participation from the previous year. Special thanks to all who helped organize and run t...

Winter Website Updates Coming Soon!
This winter looks to be a busy one here at WL.com. If you aren’t aware, Aaron is working feverishly on our next site upgrade, and what an upgrade it’s going to be! All the features currently on the site will remain, and in addition some new ones that will take the data to a whole new level of use and functionality. I’m not going to go into great detail, but here’s a teaser : Imagine you can take data going back over TEN YEARS to extrapolate the best times to fish a particular body of water, AND...
